Recovery residences are privately-owned homes or complexes that provide housing for adults with a substance use disorder (SUD) or co-occurring disorder. They serve individuals that are currently receiving outpatient SUD services or are enrolled in recovery services. NARR was founded in 2011 by a group of organizations and individuals with deep recovery housing expertise, and a goal of developing and promoting best practices in the operation of recovery residences. This instructional tool (PDF | 236 KB) on substance abuse treatment for clergy and lay persons was designed with two goals in mind.

• One characteristic of some disreputable recovery residences is an illegal practice known as “patient brokering,” in which the owners accept fees or kickbacks for transporting their residents to certain out-patient treatment providers.

• Recovery residences listed on the registry are verified by the Washington Alliance of Quality Recovery Residences (WAQRR) as following the National Alliance of Recovery Residences (NARR) best practices.
• Faith leaders who are able to recognize the signs of suicide, and know how to respond, can serve as an expanded safety net for those most in need.

Current research shows that the longer a person is exposed to and part of a sober community, the better the chances are for long-term recovery. Faith and community leaders are often the first point of contact when individuals and families face mental health problems or traumatic events. In fact, in times of crisis, many will turn to trusted leaders in their communities before they turn to mental health professionals. Faith leaders who are able to recognize the signs of suicide, and know how to respond, can serve as an expanded safety net for those most in need. The cost of repeat treatment, prison time, ER visits is far greater than the cost of a recovery home. Recovery homes on the registry and those working towards inclusion on the registry can apply for a loan up to $4,000 in order to help with operating costs. Recovery homes working towards inclusion on the registry must do so via accreditation by the Washington Alliance of Quality Recovery Residences. National

The PATH program is unique since all locally-funded agencies coordinate their services with faith-based and community organizations serving homeless people with serious mental illnesses. The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) is a 501-c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding the availability of well-operated, ethical and supportive recovery housing. We have developed the most widely referenced national standard for the operation of recovery residences. NARR and these organizations collectively support over 25,000 persons in addiction recovery who are living in over 2,500 certified recovery residences throughout the United States. Department of Health and Human Services agency to undertake a specific faith-based initiative in 2000. To support persons in recovery by improving their access to safe, stable residences with peer and community support.

• These residences allow residents to use prescribed medication for physical health, mental health, and substance use disorders.
• Living with others that are successful, demonstrates to them that it is possible and helps them reach that point.

• Both recovery residences and Oxford Houses are peer-run and peer-operated homes.

Bright Spot Sober Living

Together, these effective partnerships support mental health services, substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery at the national, state and local levels. SAMHSA continues to host numerous conferences and training programs that help faith-based and community organizations enhance their work in providing mental health services, substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery. Our mission is to support persons in recovery from addiction by improving their access to quality recovery residences through standards, support services, placement, education, research and advocacy. NUWAY Recovery Foundation provides recovery residence support up to $700.00 per month toward program fees at participating Recovery Residence partner for clients assessed as needing of safe, sober living environment while engaged in intensive outpatient treatment at NUWAY®. Deposit and any difference beyond covered monthly program fees are the responsibility of the client.

This creates accountability, friendships, and dedication to a life of recovery. The NUWAY Alliance is a nonprofit organization created in October 2019 to provide leadership, innovation, and recovery access in response to national and local trends in behavioral healthcare. It provides overarching leadership and management to NUWAY®, the NUWAY Recovery Foundation, Cochran recovery residence Recovery Services, and The Gables. Additionally, the NUWAY Alliance is available to partner with aligned organizations needing leadership and management to support recovery access. HHS is working closely with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to implement key elements of the Administration’s priorities.
